South Florida is home to some of the biggest boat shows in the world and there is never a shortage of newly finished boats from a variety of builders lining the docks. These new yacht debuts rightfully get a lot of fanfare, but what about the hundreds of smaller pre-owned yachts that receive major renovations and technology upgrades each year? Enter the Refit International Exhibition and Conference. Held in January each year in Fort Lauderdale, Refit is a trade show and technical seminar series focused on improving yacht refits, and brings together captains, owners, boatyard professionals, project managers, surveyors, designers and stylists all under one roof.
ALEXSEAL has exhibited at the Refit Show since its inception in 2016, which has provided great opportunities for building new relationships and strengthening current ones among industry experts. In addition to the popular seminars offered during the show at the Broward County Convention Center are the Refit Excellence Awards. The recipients of these awards are selected based not only on the finished yacht but on the teamwork, problem solving and efficiency of everyone involved in the refit, including the yard, owner, crew, designers, surveyor and management. ALEXSEAL is proud to have been involved in winning refit projects for two consecutive years with renowned custom boat builder and refit specialists, Jarrett Bay Boatworks.
In 2016, the 54’ Starflite was awarded the Best Power Yacht Refit between 50 and 100 feet and featured ALEXSEAL topcoats throughout. Additionally, Starflite’s extensive 2-year long refit involved a great deal of reconfiguring in the boat’s layout along with a repower and upgrading of systems throughout the engine room. The full ALEXSEAL system was utilized when piecing the boat back together and the engine room received new topcoat as well.
It was exciting that just one year later, another ALEXSEAL-finished Jarrett Bay refit would be honored with a Refit Excellence Award in the same 50 to 100 feet Power Yacht category. This project was also an extensive refit, this time involving a classic 66’ Hines-Farley sportfish named Reel Steel. The interior was remodeled and received a lengthy list of equipment upgrades while the exterior was completely refinished in new teak and ALEXSEAL topcoats, including a painted black mask on the brow and a faux teak transom. Both boats have experienced tournament successes since their relaunch, and have also been enjoying the outpouring of compliments on their boat’s new configurations and finishes.
