For over 30 years, Tripp Design Naval Architecture has been creating award-winning yacht designs that have been brought to life by a variety of first-class shipyards throughout the world. While the Tripp name may be best known for Bill Tripp III’s popular 33-foot pocket racer fleet, the naval architectural firm he founded has realized many exquisite custom sailing yachts from 12 to 86 meters (282 feet). Recently it has been their 65’ Café Racer that has taken center stage for sailing enthusiasts desiring a fast, extended cruising yacht with impressive racing capabilities.
Launched in 2009, Prevail was a collaboration between Tripp Design and Hodgdon Yachts — a U.S. based shipbuilder with a 200 year heritage. Hodgdon was one of many pioneers in the use of advanced composite technologies, and Prevail was constructed with a cold-molded structure wrapped in carbon fiber hull plating, and an extensive use of composites throughout her interior.
Closing in on her 10 year “birthday,” Prevail recently spent some time in Belfast, Maine in the capable hands of Front Street Shipyard receiving a refit which included new paint, including ALEXSEAL® custom Silver Metallic on the hull and a custom “Belfast Blue” deck. ALEXSEAL representative Alastair Smith praised Front Street’s immense dedication to honing and preparing the surface of Prevail’s hull prior to painting. “The owner wanted it as fair as possible and the team did a huge amount of long-boarding and sanding.” The results speak for themselves, as Smith adds, “this hull is as close to perfect as you can get.”
After completing this new mirror-like finish, the mast was stepped and rigged on Prevail in time for her owners to begin enjoying the summer/fall season along the many picturesque Maine harbors they call home. ALEXSEAL aficionados or sailing fans in general may recall another Tripp Design yacht launched in New England last year: 62′ Chessie Racing, which sports a stunning ALEXSEAL metallic blue and bold graphics down her hull-sides. As such, Chessie and Prevail join several other gorgeous Tripp-designed sailing yachts in possessing an eye- catching ALEXSEAL finish. Adding their names to the pantheon of sailing’s finest modern yachts are individual, but related, achievements for which ALEXSEAL is proud to be partnering in.
