Alexseal’s premium coatings products are gaining popularity in the Southeast Asia yachting market thanks in part to wonderful distributors like Oceanic Link in Singapore. M/V MOKEN is a 40′ steel hull sailing yacht which was repainted in the full Alexseal system including Finish Primer 442 and Forest Green 501 Topcoat, supplied by Oceanic Link.
This project began in late 2016 after the owner had seen a yacht sprayed in a similar color in a West Malaysia boat yard. The paint previously coating M/V MOKEN from a competing brand had faded after only a few years which resulted in the owner seeking a better quality system. The owner of M/V MOKEN is very pleased with the results of his new Alexseal paint and the team who applied it in the Subic Bay of the Philippines.

Routinely sailing throughout the world is no easy feat. Not only can it prove to be challenging and tiring for the skipper and crew, but also for the boat and her overall appearance. Willy Stiggelbout knows this from experience. Owner of KiwiGrip non-skid deck coatings, Willy has “enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with Alexseal, recommending each other’s products since 2007”.

Willy has also graciously recommended Alexseal products to applicators and refit yards including Paul Ziegler’s Seattle Fiberglass. Paul’s son Henry managed the full repaint of Willy’s 48 foot (15m) Oyster Lightwave sailboat “Pazzo”, and Seattle Fiberglass has been spraying Alexseal exclusively ever since.

Solo circumnavigation of the globe. Fewer than 300 sailors in history have accomplished it, less than the number of people who have climbed Mt. Everest, or even those who have gone to space. In 1968, some of the world’s most adventurous sailors set out on the first organized solo circumnavigation known as the Golden Globe Race. Fifty years later, the Golden Globe Race 2018 seeks to recapture the thrill and purity of this bygone era by requiring all competitors to sail solo around the world without stopping, and they will also only be allowed to use the same level of technology that was available to competitors in the 1968 race. Istvan Kopar has been chosen as one of only 30 provisional entrants for this prestigious competition that is set to launch from Falmouth, UK on June 14, 2018.

From the Boat Building Site comes this article by Chris Rayment of Queensland Australia’s Custom Boat Builders about Alexseal with full in-depth details on application and success.
Let’s talk about the Alexseal paint system.
Painting for boat builders comes somewhere at the end of all that fun construction work and can show it off or be a big pain in the backside. In custom building, most of the time we are applying filler and primer as we construct but the final topcoats are hopefully the show piece to all this hard work.
What to use???
Two pack marine paint choices are as wide varied as the alcohol we drink at the end of the work day (Jim Beam by the way for any sponsorship deals) but back to paints, supply is a big concern. If you want to use a certain brand and can’t get it due to no dealers in your area forget about it. These days most stuff is available everywhere, so what to use?

Debuting with a Flash
When a passionate owner commits to developing the fastest possible racing monohull in its class, you can be assured that every detail is considered to make the boat as fast and technologically superior as possible. After owner George David commissioned the Rambler 88 with Juan Yacht Design and New England Boatworks, the team turned to ALEXSEAL for their coatings needs due to the strong reputation of the ALEXSEAL coatings system and their metallic topcoat designed specifically for the marine environment. Having previously used ALEXSEAL on a variety of projects, New England Boatworks was already familiar with the quality and application of the products, but had never applied the ALEXSEAL metallic system, especially on a new construction project of this size or magnitude. It was in 2001 that Peter Johnstone embarked on a mission to make the perfect cruising catamaran, giving birth to Gunboat and the company’s first splash, Tribe. Sailors took notice and word spread, helping to take Johnstone’s passion from a single 62 foot cruising cat to a thriving business building luxurious cruising catamarans ranging in size from 48 to 90 feet. Johnstone’s latest innovation is the Gunboat G4, christened Timbalero 3 by its owner. In close collaboration with Holland Composites, the world’s first recreational, fully-foiling catamaran with comfortable long-range cruising accommodations was launched. This 40-foot cat not only turns heads due to her rocket-like speed around the race course, but also her bold Alexseal finish—a vibrant color trait she shares with many of her Gunboat sisterships. Front Street Shipyard located in Belfast, Maine is touted as one of the most capable and versatile boatyards in northern New England. Their expansive facility encompasses a yacht yard, marina and storage facility on Penobscot Bay catering to the needs of every type of vessel ranging from small recreational boats to commercial vessels and superyachts.
In the late autumn of 2014, Front Street Shipyard was tasked with a minor refit and repaint on S/Y Asolare, a 154′ (48 meter) cold-molded ketch. Although this project presented several challenges to the Front Street team, their forward thinking and ingenuity prevailed to complete this massive project before the end of 2014 – and more importantly before the heavy snow arrived. The full article below is from Front Street Shipyard’s first issue of their new semi-annual journal Passages. Continue reading “S/Y Asolare Coated in Alexseal at the Front Street Shipyard”

When it comes to painting a boat, the methods available and variables that could occur are numerous. All of our Alexseal representatives are well-trained in all Alexseal product uses and applications from fairing compounds to topcoats. They are happy to share this knowledge and answer any technical questions, whether the customer is a large ship builder or an individual looking to tackle the project themselves. Alexseal representative Jeff Holland – a yacht painter by trade – provided advice and support to Thor Powell when he inquired about repainting his sailboat in Alexseal.
With Jeff Holland’s expertise, and Thor Powell’s determination and creativity, Mariner’s Cat was successfully repainted in Alexseal. Mr. Powell is the President of a Great Lakes sailing club and wrote an article about his experiences leading up to the repainting of Mariner’s Cat, proving that the difference between Alexseal and their competitors is not only superior product quality and durability, but also friendly and knowledgeable support staff!
