The varied talents of Belfast, Maine’s Front Street Shipyard crew were utilized to their full potential for the year-and-a-half-long refit of Sindbad. This 80’ (24m) custom steel-hulled North Sea trawler was built in 1962 in Norway as an ice-class vessel. After nearly 30 years of service, she was purchased by the current owner’s father who transformed the classic trawler into a yacht-class vessel. Over 25 years have passed since this original transformation, so Sindbad faced a major refit with extensive upgrades and equipment replacement.

Alexseal’s premium coatings products are gaining popularity in the Southeast Asia yachting market thanks in part to wonderful distributors like Oceanic Link in Singapore. M/V MOKEN is a 40′ steel hull sailing yacht which was repainted in the full Alexseal system including Finish Primer 442 and Forest Green 501 Topcoat, supplied by Oceanic Link.
This project began in late 2016 after the owner had seen a yacht sprayed in a similar color in a West Malaysia boat yard. The paint previously coating M/V MOKEN from a competing brand had faded after only a few years which resulted in the owner seeking a better quality system. The owner of M/V MOKEN is very pleased with the results of his new Alexseal paint and the team who applied it in the Subic Bay of the Philippines.

The refit and extension of Attessa IV may seem an immense undertaking, but it is nothing out of the ordinary for Washington Yachting Group. One of many luxury yachts managed by the company, all have been transformed and added to: over 3 meters on the first Attessa, with Attessa II and III receiving additions of over 5 meters.
Attessa IV started her life in 1999 as the 91-meter Evergreen (Diana Yacht Design) but underwent an extensive transformation in 2007. After being purchased by Dennis Washington, the bow and stern were rebuilt to accommodate 100 meters of lavish appointments. This expansion of nearly 10 meters in length allowed the owners to add in a spa, cinema, and additional private helipad so that guests can have their own landing area on the bow. It was critical to establish an exquisite theme of luxury aboard Attessa IV, both inside and out.

“Application and repairability, that’s why we chose Alexseal over Awlgrip,” explains Edwin Post about the three and a half year refit project on the 100-meter S/Y Attessa IV. The vessel started her life in 1999 as 91-meter Evergreen (Diana Yacht Design) but underwent an extensive transformation when purchased by billionaire Dennis Washington in 2007. The prep-work and application to cover 80 feet near the transom demanded a coatings system that would flawlessly blend with the existing dark blue hull. Post praised the Alexseal sales and support team adding, “Jeff Holland and Alex Sandas stand behind their products and are very helpful.” Continuous application on projects like these require coatings with a forgiving nature to repair gloss
imperfections. “She’s big… and long… we just could not afford a failure with the spray color or clear coat. Alexseal stands up better.”

From the Boat Building Site comes this article by Chris Rayment of Queensland Australia’s Custom Boat Builders about Alexseal with full in-depth details on application and success.
Let’s talk about the Alexseal paint system.
Painting for boat builders comes somewhere at the end of all that fun construction work and can show it off or be a big pain in the backside. In custom building, most of the time we are applying filler and primer as we construct but the final topcoats are hopefully the show piece to all this hard work.
What to use???
Two pack marine paint choices are as wide varied as the alcohol we drink at the end of the work day (Jim Beam by the way for any sponsorship deals) but back to paints, supply is a big concern. If you want to use a certain brand and can’t get it due to no dealers in your area forget about it. These days most stuff is available everywhere, so what to use?

By definition, tenders are small boats built to support larger motoryachts and are routinely used to make the connection between ship and shore for the transportation of people and goods. Modern tenders are often custom-built to the same luxurious standards as their motherships, and as the world’s superyachts have grown in size, luxury, and sophistication, so have the design and coatings of their tenders.
Since opening their doors in 2012, Tender Shipyard has manufactured over a dozen custom yacht tenders and have several new boats currently under construction. Philippe Cabon, a naval architect by trade, started Tender Shipyard and leads a team that handles all aspects of design and construction from their facility in Olonne sur Mer on the west coast of France. Tender Shipyard’s range of models is impressive, with many composite tender designs involving an infusion of polyester or carbon fiber, and varying in size up to 40 feet (12m). Each model incorporates unique features including retractable and height adjustable hardtops, along with different power options including outboard, inboard and jet drive. One can find boats from Tender Shipyards all around the world, accompanying many impressive yachts from renowned builders such as Benetti, Heesen, Lurssen and Sunrise Yachts. From their very beginning, Tender Shipyard was looking for a finish of the highest quality possible for these runabouts; a search which led them to choose the full product range of ALEXSEAL, including primers, fairing compounds and finish coatings. With continuing new developments in ALEXSEAL’s product lines, and expansion of our global distribution network, ALEXSEAL provides Tender Shipyard with the quality, advanced technology and product availability they need to compliment the most elite and stylish yachts in the world—many of which are also utilizing ALEXSEAL products.
